What makes french so special? Is it even special? When new students are registering for their classes, they are signing up for a foreign language. The majority of the students sign up for spanish and a select few choose to venture forth in french. Why is it that spanish is so much more popular than french? I have heard so many explanations as to why only a handful of students choose to continue their french education and I still wonder why. Some say it is because spanish will be the dominant language in America in the next decade and some say that it is already the dominant language in America. It have to agree that it is a beautiful language but will it get you anywhere outside of the United States? English is the number one spoken language in the world, followed by french. If we are suppose to be successful in life and engage with the rest of the world, why are so many taking spanish and not french?
p.s. I am in my french class while I am typing this...

I have to say that I think French does sounds a lot prettier than Spanish...but it is true that Spanish is a lot more common in the US. Being able to speak fluent Spanish and put that on your resume is likely to put you above others when trying to get a job. I think it's a huge advantage to be able to speak Spanish in the US and people are probably more concerned about speaking in their own country than in foreign countries. Just my opinion...
ReplyDeleteI think that, in general, as long as you have a language, that is the most important thing. I suppose it is a matter of you plans for the future. If you plan on staying in the U.S. and being competitive for jobs, Spanish is probably the way to go. If you plan on travelling a lot or doing something where you need to converse with a lot of countries, it is probably more beneficial to have French. For myself personally, I chose French becuase I didn't want to do the same thing as my sister and I loved the way the language sounded. I stuck with it becuase it turned out to be the most fun class I have ever taken, and probably will ever take.
